El Playón, the boardwalk and boats to La Ciénaga
Ocumare de la Costa: beach, boardwalk and gateway to La Ciénaga
Ocumare de la Costa is a seaside town in Aragua, Venezuela, reached from Maracay on a mountain road that crosses Henri Pittier National Park. It's known for El Playón beach and its seafront boardwalk, and it's where the boats to La Ciénaga leave from. We arrange weekend getaways and day trips.
Things to do in Ocumare de la Costa
- Stroll the El Playón boardwalk at sunset and try the local seafood.
- Ride a peñero, a traditional wooden fishing boat, from La Boca to the calm waters and mangroves of La Ciénaga.
- Visit Cata Bay, a few minutes away by road.
- Unwind at your guesthouse: several local posadas have a pool and gardens.
Our 3-day, 2-night packages combine lodging with the La Ciénaga excursion, according to the confirmed schedule.
Getting there from Maracay or Caracas
From Maracay the road climbs through Henri Pittier National Park, past the Rancho Grande area, and then drops to the coast. It's a narrow mountain road with lots of curves, so drive it in daylight and take your time.
From Caracas, the usual route is the Autopista Regional del Centro highway to Maracay and then the same road. If you'd rather not drive, we can quote a transfer from your starting point.
Best time to go
Ocumare is a year-round destination. The dry season, roughly December to April, usually brings clearer days. Heavy rain can change sea and road conditions, and boat trips are rescheduled when they aren't safe.
Carnival, Easter week and the August and December holidays draw big crowds, so check availability early if you're traveling then.
What to pack
- Water-resistant sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses.
- Swimsuit, towel and a change of dry clothes.
- Sandals and comfortable shoes for the boardwalk.
- A waterproof pouch for your phone if you're taking a boat.
- Insect repellent and some cash for personal expenses.
Cell signal can be patchy on the mountain road, so download your booking details and contacts before you leave.
