Protected-origin cacao and the Dancing Devils

Chuao: Venezuela's cacao village, reachable only by sea

Chuao is a village on the Aragua coast of Venezuela, famous for its cacao, which holds a protected designation of origin. There's no road: you arrive by boat from Puerto Colombia in Choroní, or along a mountain trail. Its Corpus Christi Dancing Devils are part of a UNESCO-recognized tradition. We'll help you plan the visit.

Things to do in Chuao

  • Explore the village and its plaza in front of the church, where cacao is traditionally sun-dried.
  • Learn how Chuao cacao is grown and processed.
  • Enjoy Chuao beach, where the boats land.
  • If your trip falls on Corpus Christi, watch the Dancing Devils, a tradition UNESCO inscribed in 2012 as Intangible Cultural Heritage as part of Venezuela's Dancing Devils of Corpus Christi.

Getting there

First, get to Choroní from Maracay on the road that crosses Henri Pittier National Park. In Puerto Colombia, take a peñero boat to Chuao beach; from there, the village is reached overland, on foot or by local transport depending on availability.

There is also a demanding mountain hiking route that requires a guide and planning.

Best time to go

Chuao can be visited year-round, but access depends on the sea: crossings may be cancelled when waves are high. The dry season, roughly December to April, tends to be calmer. Corpus Christi, whose date moves between May and June, is the time to see the Dancing Devils.

What to pack

  • A waterproof pouch for your phone and documents.
  • Sunscreen, a cap and insect repellent.
  • Comfortable shoes for the walk from the beach to the village.
  • Water and cash to buy local cacao or chocolate.
