La Piscina, La Playita and mangroves, 15 minutes by boat
La Ciénaga, Aragua: calm turquoise water among mangroves
La Ciénaga is a calm, mangrove-lined bay on the Ocumare coast in Aragua, Venezuela. You reach it by peñero boat from the La Boca landing in about 15 minutes, depending on the sea. Its two spots, La Piscina and La Playita, are perfect for a beach day. We arrange the tour with transfers and local guides.
Things to do at La Ciénaga
- Swim at La Piscina and La Playita, two areas of calm, shallow water.
- Take in the mangroves and, when visibility allows, spot small fish near the shore.
- Go snorkeling or kayaking, depending on what's available that day (not part of the basic tour unless your quote says so).
At certain times of year and under specific conditions, parts of the coast show bioluminescence. It isn't part of the daytime tour and can't be guaranteed, so ask us about the season.
Getting there
First you need to reach Ocumare de la Costa, on the road from Maracay that crosses Henri Pittier National Park. From Caracas, take the Autopista Regional del Centro highway to Maracay.
In Ocumare, the local operator picks you up at your guesthouse and drives you to La Boca, where you board a peñero. Pickup time is set according to where you're staying.
When to go
The tour usually runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays; Monday to Friday it runs with a minimum group size, subject to confirmation. Sunny days in the dry season, roughly December to April, tend to bring the clearest water.
If the sea or the weather makes the crossing unsafe, the trip is rescheduled or adjusted.
What to pack
- Water-resistant sunscreen, a cap and sunglasses.
- Swimsuit, towel and dry clothes for the ride back.
- Sandals or water shoes.
- Drinking water and snacks, following local rules.
- A waterproof pouch for your phone and documents.
- Some cash for personal expenses.
Always follow the guides' and boat crew's instructions and stay within the marked swimming areas.
