Colonia Tovar: a mountain getaway with German roots
Colonia Tovar is a mountain town in Aragua, Venezuela, founded in 1843 by German immigrants. Expect cool weather, half-timbered houses, strawberries, sausages and craft beer. It's reached from Caracas via El Junquito or from Aragua via La Victoria. We arrange weekend stays with hotel and the 360° Tour.
Things to do in Colonia Tovar
- Walk the town center and visit the San Martín de Tours church.
- Try strawberries, peaches, German-style sausages, pastries and local beer.
- Join the 360° Tour, a roughly 2.5-hour ride to the Hydrangea Garden, the Tree House, a brewery, a sausage maker and Chocolatico Venezuela, by rustic jeep or small 'mulita' truck depending on group size.
- Relax at a mountain hotel with gardens and a fireplace.
Tastings and purchases at the tour stops are paid separately.
Getting there from Maracay or Caracas
From Aragua, take the mountain road up from La Victoria. From Caracas or Maiquetía International Airport, the usual route is via El Junquito. Both roads are winding and sometimes foggy: drive carefully and avoid night driving if you don't know the route.

Best time to go
Colonia Tovar is a year-round destination. Weekends and holidays are busy; weekdays are much quieter. The town usually hosts an Oktoberfest in October, depending on each year's program.
Nights are cold and fog is common, especially in the rainy season.
